Dario created youtube videos for Half-Life's 25th, I learned much from them.
To learn a persons map takes a skill. There are a few ways.
- Self exploration
- Joint exploration
- Tour Guide
- Developer Commentary
All these are different ways of experiencing a map. You can learn to see a map much deeper and appreciate it more when you interact with the developer. Not all great ideas are explicit; like secrets for example.
It is important that a developers players a community map by themself, but also with the mapper. The mapper can give many insights into their decisions.
To coldly judge a map is to be an amateur judge.
